Genre
Dragon Age : Origins (and the Dragon Age : Awakening expansion) is a traditional RPG. In fact it is probably one of the very very few traditional RPG’s out at the time of this writing. Hard Core RPG creation has become somewhat of a lost art. I’ll stop there regarding genre before I go to far into gameplay.
Story
The story of Dragon Age is a very deep and involved one. The basic premise is that man tried to enter the realm of gods and was cursed, these cursed became what are called Darkspawn. Occasionally these Darkspawn get together to try and wreak havoc on the world at large. It is this evil that you fight against, of course it is led by a big bad boss that you have to defeat at the end. With this as the basic framework, many smaller sub-plots are intertwined. Make no mistake, it will take you a few weeks to play through this game, but it is immersive enough that you will stay entertained.
Gameplay and Controls
I played this on the XBOX 360, however it is also available for the PC and PS3. For someone not interested in XBOX live gamerscore, I would have to recommend playing the PC version. I have seen screenshots and movies of the game in combat and it seems like there is much more control in the PC version and you can get a more tactical view of your melee by panning the camera out. The XBOX (and I would imagine PS3) version are stuck at a certain level of camera pan and you cannot move it in or out so your kind of stuck in the middle. It’s still playable like this, but I would have liked to be able to see more of the battlefield in certain fights. Other than that, the controls and gameplay are top notch. You wont find super old school turn based fighting, but you can pause the action to issue commands and orders if you like and you also pause the action when selecting targets for spells and whatnot so its about as close as your going to get these days since apparently the powers that be decided that our species has evolved beyond turn based play… but this is not the place for that argument, sorry again. Good game here good game…
Graphics and Sound
The graphics and sound are on par with games of the current generation. Nothing amazing, nothing to take away. In all honesty I could do without this category, graphics really have little bearing on how GOOD a game is… I’ll say this. The graphics were very good. They weren’t 8-bit Nintendo graphics and even if they were I still would have played the game to completion. Nuff said.
I give this game the crowning achievement of [glow=red,2,300]7/7[/glow] pieces of the rod. In today’s market I highly doubt anything will come close. If it ever does, maybe I will go to 8/7, but for now this game is the cream of the current crop.
